Madeline Gallucci, #8, 2024 | Original Mixed Media on Paper, Framed

An original mixed media work on paper by Chicago artist Madeline Gallucci. Loose, luminous washes of watercolor bloom across the sheet like a garden in full summer, settling into a warm golden yellow at the base. Over the washes, Gallucci layers looping, scribbled lines in colored pencil that trace petals, leaves, and stems, so the image moves between abstraction and flowers. It’s joyful, energetic, and full of color.

Gallucci works in painting and sculpture, exploring how social expectations shape the way we reveal ourselves, with both anxiety and celebration. She draws on online beauty tutorials and melodrama films, where mirrors and screens become places of illusion and transformation, and pairs saturated color with humble materials to question the role of decoration in how we present ourselves. She holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the University of Chicago, and has received the Charlotte Street Foundation Visual Artist Award and a Chicago DCASE Individual Artist Grant. She has held residencies at LATITUDE, ACRE, and Minnesota Street Project, and has exhibited in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Kansas City, including at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work is in the collection of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.

The work was acquired directly from the artist’s studio on Chicago’s West Side. It is French floated, mounted so the full edges of the paper are visible, within a double mat of soft periwinkle and slate blue, and finished in a custom light natural wood frame.

At 15 x 12.75 inches framed, it brings a burst of color to a bedroom, entry, office, child’s room, or gallery wall, from an artist with a serious exhibition record.
